“Hasta Luego…”

Zuri said and hung up the phone.

Hubby and I looked at each other.

“Did she really say that..?”

On Sunday Morning, when the sun was on the other side of the world, we drove Zuri to the airport. We walked with her to check-in, cruised up the escalator, and stood in a long line. We inched closer and closer to the door, only she alone could enter.

I gave final advice and words of encouragement. I am happy for her! I am sad for me — so I hugged her several times and held back my tears. She inches up to the door, I turn and walk away.

Keep going, my mind said.

Turn around, was my heart’s rebuttal.

My heart won and I turned to see Zuri moving her hand across her face. I wiped the tears streaming down my cheeks.

Me and Z on the Porch

Hasta Luego means See You Later or Goodbye.

So for the next four months, Hasta Luego to:

Oreos on my grocery list

Porch time in the afternoon

An extra cup of coffee mid-morning

That banging Teriyaki chicken

Music of all languages pumping out of the speaker she carries around

And most of all, Zuri, gliding down the stairs in her long silk gown like she is already a well-traveled 50 year old woman.

When saying Hasta Luego to one person or place, we are saying Hola — hello — to new things. So, I’m hearing words new via Facetime:

Hola, Valle Valle Valle, Farmacia, Universidad

Euros

Flamenco

Siesta

Merienda

Tapas

And I’m waking up at midnight to tell my sweet daughter, Good Morning.

Hasta Luego, friends

Thank YOU!

Writing can be such a lonely craft. I write. Press send and then I wait. I wait to hear if you have received it and if my writing has inspired you in any way. I’m super thankful for all your support via encouragement, gratitude, or financial contributions.

What I’ve Been Doing

  • I’ve been writing two chapters a day for my manuscript. Writing about me and Ontonio’s love story keeps making me tear up over here. I was two days old when Ontonio was born. He came to visit me for two weeks. We got married two months later. This November, we will be celebrating 17 years of marriage. My only regret is that I was so scarred by past relationships that I didn’t love as hard as I should have earlier. But now… it’s on and Popping 🙂
  • Three of my articles will appear in iMOM this fall. Be on the lookout for 3 Ways to Teach Your Children to be Compassionate, Connect With Your Spouse using Ally, and 6 Easy Ways to Notice Your Spouse.
  • I’m so thrilled to learn that my memoir,  I Am Home Within Myself, made it to readers in London and Italy this week.
