I was sitting outside when the hummingbird fluttered past the purple petunias Nancy gifted me. I shifted in my new blue chair to see the hummingbird better, but it flew away. It returned a few minutes later to drink nectar from the red kalanchoes, Joy dug up from her garden and gave me two years ago.

The gifts of women surround me, even in my backyard. Their souls flutter around me like the wings of the hummingbird. I remain in awe of the threads that weave us together, even when we are no longer living in the same city.

Since our move to Fairhope, Angela writes often. She asks about my husband, my health, and the kids. She shares mini-adventures of her own and sends videos she thinks I would appreciate. The last video was about a mommy hummingbird making provisions for her two eggs. She built a nest from spider web strings. When the eggs hatched, she searched for food in yards like mine and brought the nectar back to her featherless young. Miles away, through the gift of video, Angela inspires me to get a hummingbird feeder.

The birdfeeder was a gift to me, from me for Mother’s Day. It’s been eight days since I purchased and hung the red and yellow bird feeder on a tree. Finally, this morning as Chris and I sat outside sipping our coffee and listening to the birds, Chris nodded and pointed. I turned just in time to see a hummingbird flying away from the bounty of sweet sugar and water.

I laughed the laughter of awe.

Like the hummingbird, I drink from the vats of women who offer me nectar. Women like my sister who bought my new chair and invited me to sit awhile and watch the flowers, the birds and the sun go down. I drink from women like Nancy who tells me the names of the flowers, and from Angella who sends wisdom in a video.

I drink the nectar that springs from each of their souls.

May we all be a source of Nectar.

Tom and I went to our belated anniversary dinner at Firefly the other night. Our server was a lovely, soft-spoken young lady from Jamaica, who I swear could have been your sister! I pulled up your FB page and showed her your picture. She, too, was amazed at the likeness. Here’s to a wonderful writer, from one who stands in awe of your God-given talent!
