Taking a Break via the Sands of Time
There was a time, Markolee took a shower every afternoon at 4:41p.m. He is my time keeper. The child who is waiting at the door at 8:55 when I say I’m leaving the house at 9.
He was seven years old when he scribbled the letters sand-hourglass on his wish list. He almost jumped out of his skin when he opened his gift and saw the hourglass. Markolee placed it on the mantle in the living room.
In the afternoons, when I need a break, I put my feet up, tilt the globe over, and watch the sand fall to the bottom like worries should.
This past week, after sending Zuri off to college and adjusting to being a family of four, the hourglass anchored us.
At three in the afternoon, we carry our snacks into the living room.
Laughing Cow pepper jack cheese and Naan crackers
Olives and dates
Yogurt and granola
I tilt the fifteen-minute hourglass and hubby asks, of all the places we have lived, which is your favorite and why?
family in South Florida
friends and food in Atlanta
fruits from Sacramento
Sunrise and sunset in Panama City Beach.
What is the most delicious food you’ve eaten?
saltfish and dumpling stew
some kind of wafers with vanilla cream
a cup of mini-lemon-lime flavored ice balls that were more fun to eat than anything
Sweet cups, a flower with a seed that grows wild in Jamaica.
Snacks eaten
Questions answered
Time honored
Memories made
And just like that — the last bit of sand falls to the bottom.
