Hubby tried to purchase toilet paper from three stores yesterday and today, I tried two. As you might have guessed, there were no paper products on the shelves. The genius in me walked to the baby aisle to check on the baby wipes – and as you might have guessed, there are other geniuses out there in the world. This experience made me think of a paragraph I wrote in my manuscript about growing up in Jamaica.
” I grew accustomed to filling my bucket with water from the tank in our backyard and towing it to one of the two inside rooms allotted for washing red dirt from our bodies. When the cock crowed in the mornings, we rubbed the sleep from our eyes and walked through the sounds of crickets and toads to the pit toilet in the middle of the coffee field. We carried newspaper with us, rubbing it back and forth against our palms to soften the effects on our buttocks. When we did not have newspapers, we used the wisdom our grandmother had taught us about the herbs and leaves that would faithfully spring from the earth, and be gentle against our flesh.”
I am grateful to be reminded of my humble beginnings.
